Rooted and Grounded
Last week we talked about being armed and ready for 2021 because our fight is not with flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. I also mentioned that when we have holes in our armor they are invitations for the Enemy to walk into our lives, legally. Some of these openings are sin, wrong character flaws, filthy language, disrespecting your spouse and disobedience to parents. See Ephesians chapters 1 – 6:9.
On New Year’s Day I was talking to my brother in law and he said something about being grounded for 2021. When I heard the word grounded, it resonated in my spirit and I knew that the Holy Spirit wanted me to talk about it at this time.
In Matthew 13 Jesus was relating a parable to His disciples about the sower and the seed. Based on this parable there are four types of people who hear the word of God. On close examination can you honestly say which category you think you fall into? No judgment only examination and elevation.
The sower of the seed is the messenger, the evangelist, the preacher. The seed is the word of God. The soil is the condition of the hearers’ hearts.
The First Hearer - Wayside
In the parable some seed fell by the wayside and the fowls came and devoured them. It is interesting how we can read any book and remember the story but it is difficult to remember scriptures, at times. The Enemy is vigilant about robbing the word of God out of folks. Why? Because the word of God is a powerful weapon against Satan and his dark kingdom. Therefore, he tries to kill it before we realize how powerful we are or can become in God.
According to the parable when the word falls by the wayside everything and everyone is allowed to trample on it. There is no filtering of the eye gate or the ear gate. Everything that social media sends this person’s way or that is on their device enters their heart and overpower the word of God. There is no respect for the word to harness it therefore, every other voice pummels the word of God until it becomes very ineffective and almost nonexistent in the person’s heart. The word of God is trampled underfoot by everything that is profane, filthy and anti-Christ. The Enemy also understands this concept. No word No Prayer; No Prayer No Power.
Second Hearer – Stony
Some seeds fell among the stony places. Due to the fact that there is not much soil, then understandably there is no depth; therefore the sun scorch it and the seed (the word) withered. It seems like something spiritual might want to happen in their lives but because the soil of their heart is hard it does not take much for them to be defeated.
They are easily offended and so they cannot grow. These people are familiar with a little word but nothing is really connecting to make them impactful, so it is difficult for transformation to take place in their lives.
The word is not hidden in their heart because there is no depth. All this person needs to do is to ask the Lord to give them a heart that is receptive and be open to receive from the Lord during prayer. In Ezekiel 11:19 it is clear in scripture that the Lord will take away the stony heart and give us a heart of flesh. A stony heart will not forgive and is easily offended because the word did not take root.
Third Hearer – Thorns
Some seed also fell among thorns. The word cannot thrive because the environment is toxic. Probably no one in this environment wants to hear about God or anything concerning the things of God. All that the thorny hearers are concerned about are material things. How they look, what is the latest trend, what people think about them, who to impress, who like them, who does not like them. God is definitely not a priority. The seed or the word of God cannot thrive in the heart of such hearers. The Lord is not a priority and the things of this world will choke the word out of the hearer’s heart.
Fourth Hearer – Good Ground
Some seeds also fell among good ground and brought forth fruit some a hundredfold, some sixty and some thirtyfold. This is a person who has a heart to learn. There is a level of hunger in this person’s heart that makes him want to understand what God is saying in the scriptures. They want to know God. They want to learn how to talk to God in prayer. They are thankful to God for His blessings upon their lives.
These hearers believe that there must be more to life than to eat, drink and be merry. The pathway and the place where the seed fell actually depicts the condition of the heart. The seed is the word of God. In our lives we need to frequently examine how much of the word is being received and are actually growing in our heart.
Colossians 2: 6-7 KJV, As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the LORD, so walk ye in Him. Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught abounding therein with thanksgiving.
At the beginning of the year as we are all setting goals and visions let us have a category for spiritual growth as well. Some of the questions we can ask ourselves are: Do I need to read more of His word? When? How often? Will I make time to talk to God, uninterrupted by phone, computer or anyone? Will I incorporate some kind of personal fasting in my pursuit of God this year?
When I was about seven or eight years old some overseas missionaries visited my church in Montego Bay, Jamaica and I received a tiny booklet which is a miniature version of the Bible. It had only a few pages but I remember that it had a red cover and when I opened it my eyes fell on these words, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord had laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53: 6. I did not understand what it meant at the time but it was embedded in my heart from that moment and still is today.
As I was writing this parable I could not help but think about this old song that we used to sing many years ago in my country. Here is the first stanza and the chorus.
Rooted and Grounded
I spent a lot of my life chasing after this world
I didn’t realize it could never fill my soul
Then Jesus found me and rescued me saved my soul and He set me free
And He said for me to tell you that He’s counting on you
CHORUS
To be rooted and grounded in the Name of the Lord
Rooted and grounded by the Holy Ghost
And if you want to go to heaven
You must be rooted and grounded
Rooted and grounded in the Name of the Lord.

I encourage each of us to pursue God like never before. I pray that this year, for you and your family, will be one of tremendous hunger, thirst and growth for God’s word. I pray that you and your family will walk in this earth as the oaks of righteousness that you are. I pray that this year will be a season of tremendous growth in all areas of our lives in the mighty Name of Jesus Christ.
